Acronis True Image Bare Metal Restore

In disaster recovery, a bare metal restore is the process of reformatting a computer from scratch after a catastrophic failure. Typically the process involves reinstalling the operating system and software applications and then, if possible, restoring data and settings.

Acronis Bare Metal Restore approach automates and streamlines the server recovery process, making it unnecessary to manually reinstall operating systems or configure hardware. Acronis True Image takes a snap shot of your server/workstation which includes the operating system, files, applications, etc. With simple commands, complete server/workstation restores can be accomplished in a fraction of the time without extensive training or tedious administration. From the intuitive True Image interface, execute multiple server/workstation restores in parallel to accomplish mass-recovery operations. One option addresses the demands of multiple platforms, eliminating the need for customized restore procedures on each platform.

  • Fully Automated System Recovery — With a single command, server/workstation recovery steps are executed automatically with almost no user intervention;
  • Dissimilar System Restore for Windows (Universal Restore) — Integrated feature enables recovery to target Windows systems with completely different hardware configurations, including different network interface adapters, mass storage devices, video adapters, motherboards, and CPU quantities and types;
  • Point-in-Time Restore — Restore systems back to the point of the last successful backup — full or incremental — or to previous backup images;
  • Restores Machine Configuration — Details about the disk configuration and TCP/IP settings are automatically recorded and updated during every scheduled backup, ensuring recovery to the precise pre-failure state of all system configurations.

Acronis Universal Restore

A license for Acronis True Image Workstation 9.1 is required to use Acronis Universal Restore

Acronis Universal Restore allows you to restore to different hardware or to a virtual machine, providing complete disaster recovery. Disaster recovery planning and tools that enable business continuity are requirements for every business. Acronis Universal Restore prepares you for even the most unforeseen events.

How does the Acronis Universal Restore feature work?

The feature continues the Acronis True Image benefit of being easy to use. In order to use this option effectively, you must first prepare your Acronis True Image environment.

Preparation

Step 1: Install the Acronis Universal Restore option. Please note that Acronis True Image 9.1 must be licensed and installed for Acronis True Image Universal Restore to function.

Step 2: Create bootable media with the Universal Restore option selected.

Now you are ready to replace any system!

Restoration with Acronis Universal Restore

You can restore an image to a new system in 5 easy steps.

  • Step 1: Boot your replacement system with the bootable media you created and select Recovery in the Acronis True Image menu
  • Step 2: Select the image to restore and the Acronis Universal Restore option
  • Step 3: Acronis Universal Restore initiates the restore process
  • Step 4: Acronis Universal Restore detects the hardware and installs drivers
    • The product detects the machine type and installs appropriate drivers for Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
    • The product detects hard disk controllers (SCSI and IDE)

      Or

    • The product prompts you for driver locations
  • Step 5: The machine reboots

Once this process has completed, you have a working system to a replacement machine. No reinstallation of the operating system and applications is required. No re-configuration to join the network is required, as the product retains Security Identifier (SID) and network information of the system during recovery.

Acronis True Image Backup to FTP

With Acronis True Image you can backup your data to a remote machine, including virtual servers, using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) connection. This is a practical backup destination as it allows you to store important files offsite. It can be considered as an additional protection against data loss as the result of hardware failure or other disasters.

Backup to FTP is suitable for:

  • Home/Remote users — can be used as a personal offsite backup solution, protecting your data against theft, fire or other disasters that could affect your hardware. If you are a dynamic person that travels a good deal then an ftp backup is a must because you can access your backed up data from the FTP server from any computer given that you enter the security details known only by you;
  • Computer Consultants — if you are an individual or a company that provides consulting services then you can install on your clients’ machines to automatically backup to your FTP server, ensuring this way that their important data is backed up;
  • Corporations — even if the company policy includes backing up locally as a must, you have to consider an offsite backup solution too. This gives your company an additional security option against natural disasters, theft, fire, local hardware fails;
  • Outsourcing companies — if you are outsourcing work to freelancers or other companies, or if you have employees working on different locations, you know that backing up offsite files is very difficult. In the same time, your success depends on their work too, thus you could use FTP backup to have their work protected with True Image.

Using Acronis True Image, you can easily backup to FTP by selecting your FTP virtual server or other machine as a destination. You can define the FTP configuration and using the security details that you have (username/password) your data can be backed up onto the FTP server.

Acronis Management Console

The Acronis Management Console provides remote administration, ensuring that all systems in your network, regardless of your domain and workgroup structure, can be accessed and managed from one location.

How does the Acronis Management Console Work?

Step 1: Install the Acronis Management Console on any machine in your network.

It is important to note that the Management Console can be installed on as many machines as you need. Moreover, this component can be used to manage both servers and workstations running Acronis True Image.

Step 2: Open the Management Console and install the Acronis True Image Agents on remote systems in your network.

Step 3: Begin managing systems, scheduling backups, and recovering remote systems in your network.

When a user profile is created the backup archive is associated with the user profile. You can set the following parameters when creating a profile: the location of the archive, the size of the archive, the number of backup archives, and the time period to keep the backup archive.
  • Configure Backup Locations — In addition to managing backup archives according to a user profile, you can add restrictions to the backup archive location of systems in your network.
